TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

\JSometimes it is difficult to write letters of recommendation;
sometimes it is a great pleasure. This letter is most definitely
an instance of the latter. I am very pleased to convey my impressions
of Gary Hillerson to you.

I have known Gary for over two years at the Santa Cruz campus of the
University of California. I have come to know him as a student, friend,
and professional colleague. He is endowed with a keen intellect as well as
a mature understanding
of the necessity for hard work.

Faculty and students alike
respect his competence, judgement, and spirit.
He is well-liked by all who deal with him; he frequently volunteers to help
his colleagues without having to be asked.

Gary's senior thesis, the design and implementation of a
bootstrapping interpreter for logic
as a programming language, demonstrates
his ability to do original research.

Gary does not do things half way.
In a special Advanced Logic Programming
course, Gary's initiative and programming expertise was again demonstrated.
He was responsible for the successful installation on the Santa Cruz
facilities of
an experimental programming research tool. This task required
an understanding of the research tool itself, knowledge of the
operating system, and a great deal of determination.

In summary, Gary Hillerson is an exceptional individual, representing
the best of UC Santa Cruz. I would have no reservations in recommending
him either for employment or for further formal study.
